After all that had happened in Madrid on Saturday, Barcelona had the opportunity to extend their lead atop La Liga on Sunday evening against Sevilla.

Manager Luis Enrique's men would go eight points clear of Atletico with a victory and 12 points ahead of Real Madrid. It was a golden opportunity to stamp their authority on the Spanish top flight.

Luis Suarez came close to opening the scoring after 12 minutes but saw his shot cannon back off the crossbar after Lionel Messi's corner rebounded off the post.

Messi hits the post from corner kick, Suarez hits the woodwork with a volley, Sevilla snatched the opener themselves when Vitolostabbed one home at the back post.

Messi equalised after half an hour with a brilliant free-kick, Gerard Pique swept in Suarez's cross five minutes after the start of the second half to put Barcain front.

Claudio Bravo kept them there when Kevin Gameiroplayed through a one-on-one., Pique's goal was the difference, as Barcelona tightened their grip on the defence of their La Liga crown with a 2-1 win.

The Catalan giants can make history if they beat Vallecano on Thursday night in La Liga after coming from behind to take all three points against Unai Emery’s side
Barcelona have equalled Real Madrid’s record of 34 matches unbeaten after seeing off Sevilla 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Goals from Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique were enough to secure victory for Luis Enrique’s side after they fell behind to a goal from Vitolo.

The win sees Barca move eight points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of the table after they beat rivals Real 1-0 on Saturday.

Sevilla were the last side to beat Barcelona in La Liga, recording a 2-1 win over the Catalan giants back in October at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Barca have gone onto record 27 victories since that defeat and Luis Enrique’s side are now on target to beat Real’s record, set in 1988/89, when they face Vallecano on Thursday night in La Liga.
